Leave Your Hat On – Songs of Joe Cocker
Saturday 21 July
Back in 1969 Joe Cocker burst onto the scene and blew everyone away with his acclaimed performance at the legendary Woodstock Festival.
He and composer producer Leon Russell then joined forces for the brilliant Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour which was made into a hit movie and seen by millions around the world. Later, throughout his stellar 55-year career Joe sang mainly rock, soul, reggae, blues, and R&B, and stamped them all with his unique sound and special talent. The worlds best producers always wanted to record with him and he moved through many styles of roots-based music and pop. He would never just cover a song he insisted on re-writing the original groove and always giving the song an amazing new feel.
The Beatles loved him, and he was allowed to cover any of their songs a rare honour!
Joe died in 2013 and Leave Your Hat On commenced honouring his memory that same year. For this show the band will also be respecting the wonderful Leon Russell that Texan New Orleans honky tonker who as well as fantastic piano played a mean Les Paul and wrote George Bensons biggest hit Masquerade amongst so many other wonderful songs. We lost Leon just last year piano player Andy Burns is a huge Leon fan and heavily influenced by his creole and New Orleans stylings.
