‘Leave Your Hat On’ – Honouring the Legend That is Joe Cocker

This great big band is paying 100% respect to that reggae-loving working-class soul man Mr Joe Cocker…

A young white man from Sheffield England with more cigarettes and bourbon on his voice than your average 60-year-old black blues singer from Alabama. Not to say he couldn’t croon as well…people have used much imagery to attempt to describe the sound… pouring molasses on to sandpaper? One abrades one sooths…

Back in 1969 Joe burst onto the scene and blew everyone away with his outrageous performance at the legendary Woodstock Festival. He and Leon then teamed up and followed that up with the brilliant ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen’ tour which then became a very influential movie seen by millions. A rite of passage, to New Orleans-influenced pianists everywhere. It was also a major box office success in America and the World, helping to cement both their places forever in Rock ‘n’ Roll and R&B legend.

Later on throughout his 55-year career Joe sang mainly rock, soul, reggae, blues, and R&B and stamped them all with his unique sound and special talent. Producers always wanted to work with him and he tried all styles of roots-based music. He would never just cover a song he insisted on re-writing the original groove and always giving the song a respectful new path.

We’re also doing it for the wonderful Leon Russell… that New Orleans honky tonker who as well as piano played a mean Les Paul and wrote George Benson’s biggest hit “Masquerade” amongst so many other songs. He and Joe were big partners for a long time. We lost Leon earlier this year… piano player Andy Burns is a huge Leon fan.

This show will feature the incredible Rick Evans out front backed up by a hard rocking 12 piece band made up of some of Australia’s finest musicians including: guitar Brenden Mason, piano Andy Burns, drums Jeff Barnes, bass TK Colejoy, hammond Michelle Johns, backing vocals Kerry Maher, Nardia Rose, Georga Byrne, trombone Tim Blamey trumpet Bryan Chetcuti sax Jez Blamey.

Sure, you might hear ‘A little Help From My Friends’, ‘Feelin’ Alright’, ’Hitchcock Railway’,’ Delta Lady’, The Letter’, etc., but then we always like to add in a few surprising choices from his 50 years of making albums (with the cream of world producers and collaborators) …just to keep it interesting!

This gig celebrates the legendary sound of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell right from when they were the two leaders of the “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” pack and wowed Woodstock!

Leave Your Hat On‘ is full of energy, emotion and passion, and truly celebrates the spirit and sound of the much-loved sadly missed Mr Joe Cocker.

The Black Sorrows

The Black Sorrows continue to be one of Australia’’s most enduring touring bands and a festival favourite!

Membership in The Black Sorrows has always been loose and fluid with Camilleri being the only constant. The current band also consists of; Claude Carranza (guitar/vocals), Mark Gray(bass/vocals), John McAll (keyboards/vocals) and Angus Burchall (drums). Spontaneous (forget set lists) and emotionally driven, Joe ensures that no two performances are ever the same. Camilleri’s mantra is simple ‘we come to playand leave the audience feeling exhilarated’.

Camilleri launched The Black Sorrows, a loose band of like-minded musicians, in 1984 following thedemise of his seminal band Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons the year before. From humble beginnings playing inner-city cafes around Melbourne and selling albums from the boot of a car,Camilleri transformed the band into one of the most sophisticated ensembles in the country. The independently released album DearChildren, represented a turning point once CBS/Sony stepped in with a world-wide deal. When radio picked up the classic track, Mystified, The Black Sorrows really took flight releasing multi-platinum sellers ‘Hold On To Me’, ‘Harley & Rose’ and ‘The Chosen Ones’. The Black Sorrows have won the ARIA for Best Band, played sell-out shows across Europe and sold more than two million albums worldwide.

Writer of milestone Australian songs such as ‘So Young’, ‘Hit And Run’, ‘Shape I’m In’, ‘Hold On To Me’, ‘Harley and Rose’, ‘Chained To The Wheel’, ‘Never Let Me Go’ and the ‘Chosen Ones’, Joe Camilleri’s music has become part of Australian music culture. As a member of Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Joe was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. Camilleri has shown fans and critics alike that he is a performer with an undeniable energy and love of it all.

Neil remained with Chalice until they split in 1979 when he went on to play with a number of popular Australian bands, notably Captain Spalding. He is an extraordinary guitarist, a fine lead singer and his Mancunian accent enables him to sing a range of British ‘60s songs with uncanny authenticity.

In 1984 Peter retired from music because of family commitments but re-emerged in 2004 after being forced to attend yet another corporate event with a B-grade covers band (involving a laptop computer). Mike Rudd presents ‘Spectrum Plus’ w/ special guest Brenden Mason

SPECTRUM *plus is the latest plaything of Spectrum’s Mike Rudd, that veritable and ever-optimistic chap from the ‘70s, who, apart from founding Spectrum, is most famous for the opening few bars of harp (harmonica) that anybody who was around at the time, or from that time since for that matter, instantly recognises as the opening of the ‘money’ song, Someday I’ll Have Money, also occasionally known by its actual title, I’ll Be Gone, a classic national No. 1 hit way back when.

At about the same time as Spectrum was being famous, another Melbourne band was carving out its own idiosyncratic niche in Oz rock history. Madder Lake and Spectrum’s paths rarely collided but both bands were following their own stars and mutual respect was mixed in with the inevitable youthful competitiveness.

Brenden Mason was (and still is) the Madders’ guitarist and for many decades Mike has trusted Brenden’s pre-eminent ability as a guitar whisperer to maintain his small but hard-worked cache of stage and studio guitars, with the result that the two have enjoyed a warm friendship without either imagining there could be a musical union in the offing.

That moment has arrived! Spectrumites will know that Rudd has recently been dabbling with the Spectrum to Ariel retrospective concerts that feature former Arielist Glyn Mason and which have been an outstanding success.

Now another Mason enters the picture to join Spectrum in SPECTRUM*plus, naturally different again, but the prospect of adding Madder Lake’s guitar architect to the mix has Mike Rudd salivating uncontrollably. The palette will broaden too, with songs from The Heaters as well as Spectrum, Murtceps and Ariel. There might even be some room for a Madder Lake song…
